Setting CHMOD Permissions in FileZilla: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Set CHMOD Permissions with FileZilla

In this guide, you will learn how to configure CHMOD file and directory permissions using the FileZilla FTP client.

Step 1: Open FileZilla and Connect to Your Server

Launch FileZilla and enter your FTP credentials (host address, username, and password). Click “Quickconnect” to establish a connection to your server.

Step 2: Navigate to the File or Directory

In the right-hand pane of FileZilla, you will see the directory structure of your server. Navigate to the file or directory whose permissions you want to modify.

Step 3: Open File Permissions

  1. Right-click on the target file or directory.
  2. Select “File permissions…” from the context menu.

Step 4: Set the CHMOD Values

A dialog window will open showing three permission groups:

  • Owner: Permissions for the owner of the file.
  • Group: Permissions for users belonging to the same group as the owner.
  • Public: Permissions for all other users.

You can configure permissions by checking the boxes for Read, Write, and Execute, or by entering the numeric CHMOD value (for example 755 or 644) directly into the “Numeric value” field.

Step 5: Apply Changes

Once you have set the desired permissions, click “OK” to save. FileZilla will apply the updated permissions to the selected file or folder.

  • Directories: CHMOD 755
  • Files: CHMOD 644

Note: Be careful when modifying CHMOD permissions. Overly permissive values such as 777 are blocked for security reasons.

DataDachs runs PHP processes under your own user account via LiteSpeed SAPI, meaning special 777 permissions are never required. Read more in our guide on File permissions (chmod) for files and folders .
